What is Li SOCl2 battery
What is Li SOCl2 battery?
lithium thionyl chloride battery ( LiSOCl2 battery ) is a non-rechargeable lithium battery with a rated voltage of 3.6 Volts. It consists of a lithium negative electrode, a carbon positive electrode and a SOCl2:LiAlCl4 electrolyte. It generally adopts a fully sealed steel shell structure.
According to its use, it can be divided into three types: capacity type, power type and high temperature type. The capacity type battery is suitable for small current discharge and has high capacity; the power type battery is suitable for high current discharge; the high temperature type is mostly used in special high temperature environments.
Main Features:
1. Stable high working voltage platform
The rated voltage of lithium thionyl chloride battery ( LiSOCl2 battery ) is 3.6V, and the working voltage varies with the load, generally between 3.0V and 3.66V, which is the highest among all single batteries at present. Lithium thionyl chloride batteries are especially suitable for long-term discharge, the load voltage is very stable, and more than 90% of the capacity can be released on a high platform with almost constant voltage.
2. High volume specific energy / high mass specific energy
The mass specific energy is as high as 500WH/Kg, and the volume specific energy is as high as 1000WH/L, which is also the highest among all lithium batteries at present.
3. longer storage life
The annual self-discharge rate is less than 1% at room temperature, and the storage period can reach 15 years in an environment below 35 °C.
4. Wide operating temperature range
Lithium thionyl chloride batteries ( LiSOCl2 battery ) can be used in extremely harsh environments, conventional batteries can be used in an environment of -55°C~+85°C, and high-temperature batteries can be used in an environment up to 150°C
5. All stainless steel outer body, metal glass sealing structure, non-combustible inorganic electrolyte.
In addition, the Li/SOCl2 system originally had problems of safety and voltage hysteresis, among which safety problems were particularly prone to occur during high discharge rate discharge and overdischarge, and when the battery was stored at high temperature and continued to discharge at low temperature, the phenomenon of voltage hysteresis appeared obviously. (There are other articles in this blog devoted to the hysteresis and solutions of Li-Sulfur batteries)
Important uses: Lithium thionyl chloride batteries ( LiSOCL2 Battery )can be used in various fields, mainly used in smart card meters (water, electricity, gas meters), computer support power, medical equipment, wireless communication, oil drilling, portable communication equipment, scientific research instruments, remote control data Acquisition systems, military applications and other electrical equipment, etc.
