4680 battery is expected to bring new growth of cylindrical lithium battery
In September 2020, Tesla publicly released the new "4680" battery with electrodeless ears for the first time on Battery Day. The battery is 80mm high and 46mm in diameter.
In terms of batteries, compared with traditional small cylindrical batteries such as 18650 and 21700, instead o lipo battery the 4680 battery has a 5-rate increase in capacity, a 16% increase in cruising range, a 6-fold increase in battery power, and an energy density of up to 300Wh/kg, while the cost is reduced by 14%.
In terms of battery packs, the 4680 adopts a module-free design, and fewer cells can reduce the difficulty of battery thermal management.
In addition, the 4680 uses the laser electrodeless ear technology to remove the main heating components of the battery, reducing the internal resistance of the battery and improving the thermal stability of the battery. At the end of January this year, Tesla first showed the new battery and its battery production line called Roadrunner.
So, how do you view the future direction of 4680 batteries?
The 4680 large cylindrical battery has three main improvements, namely: effectively improve the overall space utilization rate of the LiFepo4 batteries system; reduce the use of structural parts and production processes to reduce costs; take into account energy efficiency, effectively improve power, and ensure safety performance, to achieve the three balance.
It is a powerful impetus for battery technology. Industry experts believe that, just like the 21700 proposed by Tesla, the 4680 model may become the mainstream of the next generation of cylindrical batteries in the future. For battery companies, the issue that must be considered is cost.
